Recently, the subject of charity and our nation’s state of giving has become a hot topic. But, at Making It Big our state of giving is at a constant. True, we are a business in the business of selling clothes, but we are also a business in the business of helping others.

Shortly after I arrived at Making It Big I became the Donations Coordinator. This role is a most fulfilling one. It was my job to actively seek out non-profit organizations dedicated to helping women in need. What makes this especially rewarding is that the clothes we give are going to women who otherwise might not be able to receive clothing. When dealing with charitable stores or clothing donation centers, plus-size clothing is always the first to go and demand far exceeds supply.

Today, in my opinion, there is no greater need for plus-size clothing than is needed for those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Immediately following Katrina, Making It Big made a large clothing donation, but what is more important, MiB continues to give to the women who were affected by this catastrophe. So often a disaster strikes, time passes, and then ……we forget. I am proud to say however, that MiB has definitely not forgotten those affected by Katrina. In the early part of this year we again donated thousands of dollars worth of clothing to Community Action, a great organization helping affected communities in the Alabama and Louisiana area. And, we will continue to donate so long as there is a need.  

Whether it’s Katrina victims, women re-entering the working world, or those needing school clothes, MiB is dedicated to the plus-size woman. Promoting higher self-esteem and goodwill, MiB knows that when you look good you feel good. One new blouse or dress can make all the difference in someone’s day, and in many cases their life. As Donations Coordinator, MiB taught me that giving changes the life of the receiver, but moreover changes the life of the giver. I look forward to sharing more about each different donation with you, there are just too many to list all at once. Each one has a special story that touched my heart and I know it will touch yours too.
